WHAT THEY SAID

Reaction on theage.com.au to Peter Roebuck's column,The Age, March 10:A little harsh coming from a leading Australian newspaper. Let's not forget that his position in the cricket team is his job and occupation. Albeit, a privileged one. Yes, his abrupt departure from the team left a gap, which was competitively filled as shown, but his willingness to leave to be with family, is one that should be shown by more high-profile Australians. JAMES SAITRoebuck is so obviously correct in his analysis and comments that it should not need saying or reinforcing. This is not a family emergency, it is a case of a clearly nice but in many ways immature man in what is clearly more of father-daughter (read: spoilt little girl) relationship than one of equals . . . If a baby cries don't shower it with attention. CHRISI agree that sports people should not . . . be considered role models. The focus should exclusively be on how they play a game €” and for crying out loud I wish people would stop quoting them. However, I find this article sexist and insensitive: the comment about wives knowing their place and not making extra demands is vomit inducing and straight from the 1950s. LISAPeter €” you can't say on the one hand that "journos are the last people on earth entitled to speak about anyone else's affairs" and then say "it is no longer possible to turn the other ear and ignore the gossip". Of course it's possible €” when it comes to the private lives of these people, just mind your own damn business. PRMGrow up all you critics of this article. This is what it is like in the real world. I know plenty of people in the greater workforce whose career growth has been stunted due to their immaturity and poor judgement in relationships. Perhaps it is Cricket Australia's poor judgement also in making it well known, their intentions for "pup". BILLAny chance that Clarke's leaving the NZ tour to aid Bingle is simply a PR stunt by CA to improve cricket's standing among women? BRENTON MORRISSEYAll Clarke has done is return home from what is yet another meaningless tour in order to care for his fiancee who is dealing with a lot of stress €” stress caused by you people and the paparazzi hounding her 24-7 over something that happened three years ago with which she had little to no control over. Give them, and all of us, a break. AKGood story. I think Peter Roebuck is spot on. I would go one step further and drop Clarke permanently. WOFTRAM
